THE NEW PATEK PHILIPPE: OUR TOP 3

Today, "The Art of Watchmaking.", a grand exhibition by Patek Philippe is taking place in New York.

A 10-day long event where Patek Philippe will feature some of the most important and iconic models but also the new Limited edition models released to celebrate the happening event.

To be "straight to the point" what we will show you next is a resumed review and opinion about our chosen 3 of 9 watches released.

So you can be up to date while not spending too much time reading product characteristics as some brands and pages do.

Like I regularly say:

"If I did want to see the full list of the watch characteristics I would check the brand webpage".

The first new timepiece that we've chosen is most probably the most unexpected one that has been released by P. Philippe in a commemorative limited edition.

The Patek Philippe 5522A Limited Edition Pilot's Calatrava

The Pilot's Calatrava 5522A

It's the first time we see this model without a date window and that not bad at all, it's surely different from what P. Philippe has got us used to.

It's surely the most controversial and "unusual" novelty due to it's larger case diameter (42 mm) in white gold, a little bit uncommon for P. Philippe watches.

In my opinion is a watch with a target more defined by it's commercial and non-traditional looks, and we all know that by not using a date window that decreases even more the potential buyers within the Haute Horlogerie community,

There's not much to talk about its mechanical wonders, it uses a very similar mechanism to the 5524G, but instead of the commonly used 324 SC, it uses a more "basic" and all-around caliber, the 324 S.

So, follow my logic, same dial, almost the same caliber, and another controversial novelty.

In all this recent popularity what gets the most of my attention has to be its diameter, it's quite a standard procedure to use a big case size in Pilot's watches on the industry, but not on the brands that so strongly and objectively try to maintain a traditional message and image.

18K White gold, blue lacquer dial and Arabic numerals also in 18k white gold.

But I do have to say, I kinda love those blue steel Hours/minutes hands!

The Patek Philippe 5531R World Time Minute Repeater New York 2017 Special Edition

With a built standard totally different from the Pilot's watch shown above, it's time to introduce you to this tipically traditional and complication based timepiece.

Over the past few years Patek Philippe worked to define a traditional way to make their complications and to establish a guideline that would define P. Philippe as one of the most important brands when it comes to chiming complications,

Apart from the GrandMaster Chime, released on 2014, that was a combiniiton of almost all complications made in Haute Horlogerie, Patek Philippe finally introduced a never seen conjugation of complications.

The new model, the 5531R, a world time minute repeater is the first ever seen Patek Philippe to chime the local time instead of the home time.

So basically instead of having the hour, minutes hands connected to chiming mechanism, you have the world time directly connected to the chiming mechanism so this way you will always have a precise and continued precision of local time chiming.

One other interesting and new feature is that the watch will chime the time that the hands will show at the end of the strike.

Regarding the design and visual aspect of the watch we can agree its quite a beautiful timepiece. (As most of the world time complications are)

It features a cloisonné enamel dial available in two versions: "New York by day" and "New York by night", both with city landscape that show colors matching the tones of the real world time (bright for the version and dark for the night version).

The Patek Philippe World Time 5230G New York 2017 Limited Edition

After talking about the 5531R it's now time to introduce it's modern intepreation, as I actually see it.

The 5230G comes to our eyes with a touch of a more industrial design and interpretation of forms and dial finishing.

Either the colors used on the center fixed metal plate or the full watch aesthetics show a more clean interpretation of this world timer.

The blue centered metal plate features the same Manhattan Landscape as in the 5531R but this time with that modernistic visual I wrote above.

What did you think of our TOP 3?

We are doing in depth reviews of this 3 limited edition models once we have full-details, but relax, we will warn you!

Best regards to all,

Diogo
